KidsXpress Telemedicine: Care From Wherever You Are
Part 4 of 4 · Helping families understand their care options.
Fast Care Is a Click Away introduces another way to reach KidsXpress. Our larger promise remains Fast Care You Can Trust: pediatric-focused care that helps families choose the appropriate next step, whether that starts with a video conversation or an in-person visit.
KidsXpress telemedicine serves children and young adults ages 0–21 across Alabama for appropriate non-emergency concerns. Here is a practical guide to getting started, preparing for the conversation, and understanding what happens afterward.
Step 1: Need care? Consider the right setting
Think about the concern you want to discuss and whether your child may need a hands-on examination, testing, or treatment. Telemedicine can be useful for some concerns, but a provider may recommend an in-person appointment based on the symptoms and assessment. Your regular pediatrician remains an important part of your child's ongoing care. [1]
If you are unsure which option fits, contact KidsXpress at (844) 871-5437 (KIDS). If you suspect a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department instead of waiting for an online appointment.
Step 2: Choose virtual or in-person care
For a virtual appointment, select Start a Virtual Visit on the KidsXpress website. The button opens our official scheduling page in a new tab. On the reason-for-visit screen, choose Telemedicine, then follow the prompts for the appointment request.
For an in-person urgent-care visit, use Save Your Spot or visit our clinic at 300 Doug Baker Blvd, Suite 200, in Lee Branch Shopping Center near Publix. Virtual and in-person appointments share the scheduling destination, so choosing the correct visit type matters.
Check the current availability and confirm insurance or self-pay details before starting. Scheduling is not a guarantee of an immediate connection, and this guide does not promise a specific wait time, app, or appointment fee.
Step 3: Get ready to connect with KidsXpress
Follow the clinic's instructions for joining the virtual visit. Use a phone, tablet, or computer with the required camera and microphone, and test your connection before the appointment. Pick a quiet, private place with good lighting so the provider can communicate with you and your child. [1] [2]
Have your child's symptom history, medication and allergy information, and questions nearby. A caregiver should be available to help a younger child participate. Ask the clinic how to arrange any needed interpreter or accessibility assistance before the appointment rather than assuming the technology supplies it automatically. [1] [2]
Step 4: Talk through the concern
Describe when the symptoms started, what has changed, and what concerns you most. The provider may ask follow-up questions and observe your child over video when appropriate. If you have already measured a temperature or recorded other relevant information, keep it available. [1] [2]
Be honest about what you can and cannot show on camera. A video connection cannot replace every examination. Treatment and prescription decisions depend on the assessment; some concerns require testing or an in-person visit before a plan can be made. [1]
Step 5: Understand the next steps
Before ending the conversation, ask what to do next, what to watch for, and when to seek further care. The plan may include home-care guidance, follow-up, or a recommendation for an in-person examination. Ask questions if an instruction is unclear. [2]
If your child worsens or you develop new concerns, follow the provider's guidance about getting help. Telemedicine is a way to access care when appropriate, not a reason to delay a necessary clinic visit or emergency evaluation.
One KidsXpress experience, two ways to connect
Telemedicine does not replace KidsXpress Urgent Care. It gives Alabama families another way to begin a conversation with a pediatric-focused provider. Our Hoover clinic remains available for in-person urgent care and services that need on-site testing or hands-on assessment.
Use the option that fits your child's needs. Start with the telemedicine service page if you want to learn more, or choose Telemedicine in the scheduler when you are ready to request a virtual visit.
