KidsXpress Telemedicine: Care From Wherever You Are

Part 2 of 4 · Helping families understand their care options.

Parenting rarely leaves an empty calendar. When a child feels unwell, families may be balancing work, transportation, siblings, and school routines at the same time. Telemedicine can offer another way to reach a provider when a virtual visit is appropriate. [1]

KidsXpress brings pediatric-focused virtual care to children and young adults ages 0–21 across Alabama. The goal is not to make every visit virtual. It is to help families access the care setting that fits the situation.

1. Care from home

An appropriate virtual visit lets you speak with a provider without first traveling to the clinic. Your child can remain in a familiar space while you explain your concerns, answer questions, and discuss what to do next. This can be especially helpful when organizing transportation would otherwise make seeking advice harder. [1] [2]

Home is not always the right setting for treatment. If the provider recommends an examination, testing, or another level of care, following that recommendation is an important part of the visit—not a sign that telemedicine failed. [1]

2. Less disruption to your day

Without a drive to the clinic, a virtual appointment may be easier to fit around family responsibilities. It can reduce the travel portion of a visit, although you should still allow time to prepare, complete any requested forms, and speak with the provider. [1]

Availability and appointment length vary. Telemedicine does not automatically mean an instant visit or a shorter wait. Check the current schedule and make sure you can be present for the conversation rather than trying to multitask through your child's care.

3. Access to pediatric-focused care

KidsXpress telemedicine offers another point of contact with the clinic for eligible concerns across Alabama, including families who are not close to our Hoover location. That gives you a virtual option alongside our in-person services.

Having an additional option does not replace the relationship with your child's regular pediatrician. Continue routine visits and ongoing care with that team, and share relevant information from an urgent-care visit when appropriate. [1]

4. A comfortable option when your child is sick

A quiet room, a familiar caregiver, and a favorite comfort item can help some children take part in a virtual conversation. Staying home for an appropriate visit also means avoiding the travel and waiting-room portion of that appointment. [1] [2]

Comfort works best alongside good preparation. Your child should be available to the provider, the room should have enough light for the camera, and your device should be positioned so you can communicate clearly. Ask the clinic for help if you need language or accessibility support; do not assume every tool or accommodation is automatically available. [1]

5. Another way to get the care you need

Virtual and in-person care are not competing services. A telemedicine conversation may help you understand a concern and the appropriate next step. Sometimes that next step is care at home; sometimes it is a trip to the clinic or another care setting. [1] [2]

KidsXpress offers in-person urgent care for common illnesses and minor injuries, with on-site services such as labs, X-rays, and sports physicals. Those hands-on services remain important when they are needed. The benefit of telemedicine is having another way to begin—not avoiding an examination at all costs.

Make the choice that fits your child

If you are considering a virtual visit, check the clinic's current availability and confirm payment or insurance details first. Choose Telemedicine on the KidsXpress scheduling page, then follow the instructions provided for the appointment. Call (844) 871-5437 (KIDS) if you need help deciding between virtual and in-person care.

For a suspected medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Telemedicine is for appropriate non-emergency concerns, and it should never delay emergency treatment.
